STRETCH MARKS


Stretch marks (or “striae”) happen when intense changes in the shape of your body result in “tearing” of the under layers of your skin. Your skin has multiple layers. The upper topmost layer is called the epidermis. Beneath that layer of skin is a layer known as the dermis. In the dermis is where stretch marks can form. With the tearing occurring in the lower layer dermis, there isn’t a bleeding or scabbing that takes place similar to normal wound on the epidermis, but the damage is visible to the eye in the form of stretch marks. Over time, the tears heal and form scars. This is why stretch marks appear initially as some hue of red but will fade and become white over time.

 

 

PREGNANCY


These are generally one of the most concerning things that pregnant moms worry about regarding their appearance. Stretch marks typically appear in the second trimester of pregnancy—between 13 and 21 weeks—but can develop at any time between conception and delivery. They usually appear as red or pink lines on breasts, stomach, arms, thighs, and hips. More than 50% of all women can get stretch marks while pregnant, so concerns are justified. Stretch marks do not go away on their own, so for many women, getting stretch marks means a lifetime of trying to hide them from others.

 

WEIGHT LIFTING


A common misconception regarding stretch marks is that only women can get them. However, men are equally as likely to develop stretch marks as women. Usually for women a leading cause of stretch marks is pregnancy. For men, on the other hand, the factors are generally related to rapid muscle gain, weight gain, or weight loss. It’s common with Body Builders, however, regular men who like lifting weights at the gym and sculpting their bodies are also at risk for getting stretch marks as a result of developing muscles and/or rapid weight gain and loss.
